Testosterone

Testosterone is the most important representative of the male sex hormones, collectively called androgens. It is what makes a man feel masculine. Among other things, testosterone is responsible for normal growth and development of the male sex organs, aggressiveness, sexual behavior, libido and the maturation of sperm.

Testosterone accelerates muscle buildup, increases the formation of red blood cells, speeds up regeneration, and speeds up recovery time after injuries or illness. It also stimulates the entire metabolism, which results in the burning of body fat.

Testosterone is present at very low levels in boys prior to puberty. It is at its highest levels during the years of puberty and begins to decline at about the age of 23. In the late 40's and early 50's, the male sex hormones are about one-third to one-half what they were in young manhood. By the age of about 80 to 90, testosterone has decreased by about 60 percent. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency may include erectile dysfunction, decreased sex drive, tiredness, irritability, depressed mood, loss of muscle and strength, accelerated aging and obesity.

Studies show that testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is as potent in its anti-aging effect as estrogen and progesterone replacement in women. It renewed strength, improved balance, raised red blood cell count, increased libido, lowered LDL cholesterol, increased bone density and formation, heightened mood and a sense of well-being as well as increased some mental functions, particularly visual spatial ability. Men receiving TRT reported having better sexual performance, initiation of sexual intercourse and an increased ability to maintain an erection.

Just as with estrogen and breast cancer, it may be that multi-hormonal replacement with testosterone, DHEA, melatonin and growth hormone offers the best defense for men against prostate cancer.

Testosterone is a potent medication and should only be used if your levels are below normal. The best way to maintain normal levels of free circulating testosterone (and growth hormone) is with regular vigorous exercise, particularly treadmill running and weight training.

NOTE: Testosterone replacement is becoming increasingly popular among women who claim it makes them feel sexier and energized.
